Competitive Gymnastics

XCEL is the competitive gymnastics program we offer at Tumbles Athletic Center, providing a structured yet flexible pathway for athletes who want to compete.

XCEL is a national program designed by USA Gymnastics that gives gymnasts a fun, achievement-focused competitive experience. Unlike traditional Junior Olympic levels,

XCEL allows athletes to progress at their own pace while learning customized routines that highlight their strengths. The program is ideal for gymnasts who want the excitement of competitions with a balanced training schedule. At Tumbles, our XCEL teams focus on building strong fundamentals, developing beautiful skills, and fostering confidence both on and off the equipment—all while creating a supportive team environment where every athlete can shine.

Recreational vs. Competitive Gymnastics: What’s the Difference?

When families first step into the world of gymnastics, one of the most common questions we hear is: “What’s the difference between recreational classes and competitive gymnastics?” While both options build strength, confidence, coordination, and a love for movement, the experience looks and feels different depending on your child’s goals — and understanding those differences can help you choose the best fit.

Recreational Gymnastics

Building Skills, Confidence, and Joy
Recreational gymnastics is where most children begin. These classes focus on developing foundational skills, improving strength and flexibility, and helping athletes progress safely at their own pace. The emphasis is on fun, learning, and personal growth rather than preparing for competitions.

Kids in recreational classes experience:

  • Consistent weekly lessons
  • A supportive, low-pressure environment
  • Skill progressions across all events (vault, bars, beam, floor)
  • Opportunities to build friends, confidence, and independence
  • Flexible schedules that fit easily into busy family routines

Recreational gymnastics is perfect for families who want their children active, learning continuously, and gaining all the physical and mental benefits of gymnastics without the additional commitments of a competitive program.

Competitive Gymnastics

Structure, Goals, and Team Experience
Competitive gymnastics takes the sport to the next level. At Tumbles, our athletes compete through the USA Gymnastics Xcel Program, which offers a fun, flexible, and achievement-focused path for gymnasts who want to train with more intention.

Competitive gymnasts experience:

  • Multiple practices per week
  • Focused training on technique, conditioning, and routine construction
  • The excitement of performing at real competitions
  • Being part of a team and representing Tumbles
  • Learning responsibility, discipline, time management, and resilience

The competitive program is designed for athletes who are motivated to push their skills further, enjoy structured learning, and thrive in a team environment. It’s also an excellent path for gymnasts looking for long-term progression within the sport.

Which Path Is Right for Your Child?

There’s no “one-size-fits-all” answer — and there doesn’t need to be. Some gymnasts stay in recreational classes for years and flourish. Others discover they want a challenge and transition into competitive gymnastics. At Tumbles, our coaches guide families through both options, helping each athlete find the path that fits their abilities, goals, confidence, and excitement level.

The Best Part? You Don’t Have to Choose Alone.

If your child loves gymnastics, shows strong body awareness, or is asking about competitions, we’re happy to evaluate their skills and share whether competitive gymnastics might be a great fit. And if recreational classes are the right place for now — that’s perfect too. Both programs build strong, confident kids.
